The arcade version of Battle Gear 4 Tuned working on home PC, courtesy of Romhack. The sound effects and BGM are now fully working and the controls are a lot easier to configure. You can now also properly select manual transmission if you want to and also adjust the difficulty of the CPU cars. Although you can now set the gas and the brake on the same axis (in this case the left and right shoulder buttons of my pad), I think there's something still a tiny bit off with it as it looks like I'm braking a tiny bit every time I come off the accelerator, although TBH I don't think it's hugely affecting my speed. I'm not that good at the game, these videos are really just to show the state it's in at the moment on home PC, so please don't bother with any critiques of my driving.
Thought I'd talk a bit about a series that's fairly unknown in the west. Now, I'm by no means an expert here, but maybe I can get a few people interested at the very least. Side By Side is an arcade racing game series from Taito that focuses on touge and drifting. The series started in 1996 and was followed next year. Also in 1997 a PS1 port was released, called. This release is basically a remix that combined the two arcade games into one. In 1999 Side By Side Special 2000 for PS1 was released.
SPU-X 2.0.0 100% Playable. Emulation settings - VU's - set clamping mode to Extra + Preserve Sign jaydee1977.
The most important difference between the two releases is that Special 2000 includes support for the Dual Shock controller and analog controls. However, and this where many online sites describing the game go wrong, the two are not the same thing here.
The support for Dual Shock means only that the game takes advantage of the controller's rumble function. It does not support the analog controls on a Dual Shock controller.
To get analog controls, you need to use Namco's. So if you want the game and want to play with analog controls, you need to buy Side By Side Special 2000 and a neGcon. With a neGcon the game feels incredibly smooth and playable, I wholeheartedly recommend playing the game this way. Around the same time Taito decided to change the series' name to Battle Gear and released in 1999.
The focus on touge was carried over. In 2000 was released in the arcades. 2001 saw the home release of BG2 on PS2.

The game also had some online features. In 2002 a European publisher called Midas Interactive licensed the game and released it as in PAL territories. As can be expected the online features were removed but otherwise the western release is very solid, it even includes the ever-important 60hz mode. This is still the only port of any game in the series available outside of Japan. Battle Gear 3 was released in 2002 and the PS2 port a year later.
Like with the previous game's port, BG3 had online features on the PS2 and players could share time attack times and ghost cars. The home release also came with a Net Entry Key, a secure device intended to be used with the game's arcade version. Time records could be uploaded and additional parts and cars could be uploaded this way. Also in 2003 Taito released Battle Gear 3 Tuned in the arcades, which included new tracks and courses.
Battle Gear 4 was released in 2005 and in 2006. These never saw a release on a home system and the series hasn't continued in the arcades either. Side by Side Special is pretty fun, but I've never quite figured out good cornering techniques for it or BG2. I also tried BG3 once but it feels really barren without online. 4 and 4 Tuned also require Netkeys for the tuning so if you find one and the arcade doesn't have any (which they most likely will not) you're forced to use stock cars. Shame neither got ported, and it seems Taito's abandoned the series. It's pretty fun, and I love the little details like the speed warning bell and the headlights flipping up on cars with concealed headlights in 3 on the first course's tunnel section.

Great vibe, fun physics and awesome interiors views and attention to detail as previously mentioned. Just does an awesome job of capturing the Initial D touge atmosphere all around. An arcade in the area used to have a cab and it was way fun, even had a ratcheting side brake handle built in as an awesome touch. I recently picked up a bunch of Japanese racing titles on PSX and Saturn and ALMOST bought Side by Side Special 2000, but decided against it at the last minute.
I plan to grab it at some point but after buying 3 of the Touge games and several other racing titles I felt like I should balance the order out with a couple other genres:p If we wanted to get some BG3 time attack going I'd be happy to participate. Never had any competition to really push me on this one, it'd make the game a lot more fun! Posts: 205 Joined: Mon Aug 27, 2012 10:09 pm Location: Rave City Riverfront. I should dust off my copy and put some runs in tonight so we can get a time attack thread going, I'm worried about how out of practice I'll be haha. Edit: Man you've got me all worked up now, I've been thinking about it all day at work I can't remember what mountains this games has.was Haruna/Akina among them? I'm wondering if it might be fun to do weekly/biweekly/monthly challenges for each course at a time just for the sake of focusing and really learning the game. Either way I'm eager to get started!

My big box of jp games shipped out the other day, I have copies of Touge Max G, Touge King the Spirits 2, and Touge 3 coming along with some other racing games. Do you happen to have any of the Touge games? Posts: 205 Joined: Mon Aug 27, 2012 10:09 pm Location: Rave City Riverfront.
Just fired it up, looking forward to re-learning how to race without analog triggers for accel/brake. Looks like I managed to get PERFECT on every class in Battle Gear mode back when I played it before:D I don't think it's named as such anywhere in the game or the manual, but Mt. Haruna is the 弩級 course.

I thought the 超弩級 course was Akagi but it doesn't look like it from the course select screen. (Edit: just tried racing on it, it's Happogahara.) Is it even worth bothering with the 初級, 中級, and 上級 loop courses when the point-to-point touge races are available? I've only tried Touge 3 out of those, a friend got it in a lot of other games. Posts: 31 Joined: Tue Aug 28, 2012 6:06 pm Location: D.C. Well I just dug out my BG3 DVD-R and found a scratch through the label so that's awesome.
Busy digging it up now, I should have just replaced it with a legit copy ages ago. I got it working actually. I'll definitely be picking up a legit copy if we're going to be running time trials for a while (should have put it on that order.). If someone could hook me up with the ID/password whatever it is I need to access the majority of the game in the meantime that'd be rad. For now I guess I'm going to start sorting out the physics on Haruna since I'm most familiar with that road. Edit2: OK disregard that I got it under control Well after my first evening back with the game my best on Haruna downhill is a 3:47:745 in my 180SX. Not very quick at all but it's a point of reference if nothing else.

Great to share my knowledge of the games here. To get the ball roling for the ps2 games: To get the ending sequence in Battle Gear 2 you need to win with a Class A car on a road track (not one of those round tracks) with three.
of difficulty. I can't achieve that at all. Well, maybe some day. Also Battle Gear 3 has another secret track for when you complete All the Classes.
It's this track: Posts: 151 Joined: Sat Apr 06, 2013 4:04 pm Location: Netherlands. A bit of a necro bump, but! I distinctly remember seeing the cover art for Tokyo Road Race in Kmart circa 2004, and thinking 'This looks like a crappy budget game' Funnily enough, I thought the same of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer / Tokyo Highway Challenge years later, when I stumbled upon it on eBay while looking for a game to play with my new Dreamcast. It wasn't until I bought it and tried it, that I knew it was something amazing. What's with western localizations of these fantastic arcade racers always being marketed to look like bargain bin shovelware?
Honestly, it's sad! Posts: 4 Joined: Fri Apr 15, 2016 6:31 am. I'm guessing the name change from Battle Gear 2 to Tokyo Road Race was because the publisher thought that A) The first Battle Gear wasn't released in Europe so it would've confused the audience to only get the sequel and B) Tokyo Highway Challenge had been out for a few years and they wanted to benefit from having a similar name. Shame that they dropped the JP box art, maybe they couldn't get the original files? While on the topic of arcade racer name changes, taking Touge 3 and releasing it in Europe as Road Rage 3 boggles my mind. They even kept the numeral, even though there was no Road Rage 1 or 2.
Well, that's not entirely true. There was a game called Road Rage for PS1.which is actually the EUR release of Konami's futuristic racer Speed King.

I've been Playing BG2 and 3 a lot lately and I have a few question about them, hope you guys can help me with this: 1 - Any idea how to unlock the bonus course 4 (the snow one) on Tokyo Read Race? I've already cleared all the courses with all car classes (A-B-C) except for the Course 8 using an A car (not enough time extends makes it hard as hell).
